Delicatessens Offer Better, Healthier Prepared Meals than Grocery Stores

Friday, September 28, 2018

Simple Fare Catering, Medford, Somerville, MA You work hard, you have a busy lifestyle. Stopping off and buying prepared meals on the way home from work is a great idea for many families. But, where you buy it matters. More and more folks are stopping at the grocery store for pre-made meals to alleviate the stress at dinnertime. But what's in those meals? What you are feeding yourself and your family matters.

"Freshly Made" Doesn’t Always Mean Fresh Ingredients

Not all stores promise that the prepared meals they sell are fresh and not processed. But they certainly imply that. There is a busy "chef" at the counter who makes it look like you are getting a homemade meal.

But you’d be wrong to assume so. In fact, only about half of the prepared meals purchased are made on premises.

In fact, some dishes are not even prepared in the same ZIP code as the store. “In-store preparation” carries high costs. As a result, those stores that make dishes on-site charge accordingly.

Some stores provide meal solutions that consumers perceive to be fresh but in fact have been delivered frozen to the supermarket and are reheated in the store ‘kitchen.’

Neither option produces dishes that are necessarily free of preservatives or other ingredients you’ll find in processed food.

Sometimes the meals are even made with packaged processed foods. The creamy sauce, the mashed potatoes, the chicken cutlets, the dressing, all processed.

Now, about the salt.

Most of the sodium in our diet comes from salt added to processed and restaurant foods. But there’s loads of sodium in the dishes in the prepared meals department.

Turkey meatloaves can be mini salt licks with 891 milligrams in 6 ounces. Lemon orzo can be a salt bomb, with 938 milligrams per serving. That’s almost 40% of the daily recommended limit.

The health consequences of overdosing on sodium are serious. Too much boosts the risk of high blood pressure, which raises the risk of heart disease and stroke.
